Michael Carrick prepares Manchester United for a special clash with his former club

Michael Carrick is preparing to lead Manchester United onto the St James’ Park pitch for the first time as head manager in a clash against Newcastle United. This return to his hometown marks a significant milestone in the career of the specialist, who took charge of the Red Devils until the end of the current season.

Carrick’s appointment occurred under unusual circumstances while he was driving to the North East of England. Despite the life-changing offer from the club’s board, Michael chose not to disclose the news during a family event.

The manager’s close friend, Chris Hood, noted: «It doesn’t shock me, but nothing was mentioned. Not one of us knew, even though rumors were already circulating around him». Carrick preferred to dedicate that precious time to connecting with his loved ones, demonstrating a deep commitment to his roots.

Michael’s special bond with the region is evidenced by his support for the legendary Wallsend Boys Club. This institution has produced 97 professional footballers, and even US President Donald Trump could be proud of such a concentration of talent.

After the club’s facilities were destroyed by severe weather in 2012, it was Carrick’s foundation that helped restore its operations. Thanks to the funds raised, a new community hub for young athletes was opened in 2023.

Club chairman Steve Dale emphasized: «Michael is still intrinsically linked because he credits the boys’ club with so much that was positive about his childhood». The manager strives to ensure that today’s youth have a safe place to develop and fall in love with football.

Interestingly, in his youth, Carrick was an ardent Newcastle supporter and even appeared on television shows wearing the “Magpies” kit. The club tried to retain the talent by organizing a meeting with his idol, Peter Beardsley, for his 13th birthday.

However, a negative experience during a youth tournament trip and the lack of a clear reserve team structure at Newcastle at the time forced him to choose West Ham. At the London club, Michael saw a clear pathway to senior football, which eventually led him to winning 18 trophies with Manchester United.

Today, Newcastle’s academy is undergoing a transformation, attempting to avoid losing talents of Carrick’s caliber. Head coach Eddie Howe emphasizes the significant improvements in infrastructure and youth training methods.

«We need to expose them to the best coaching possible because I’m a big believer in their development through coaching. Raising the level of player is a long-term project», Eddie Howe concluded ahead of the crucial meeting with Carrick’s side.
