In the Ukrainian capital, law enforcement officers detained Hromadske journalist Yevhen Shulhat. According to the police, the reason for the detention was an alleged violation of military registration rules. This was reported by “Glavkom,” citing Hromadske.
The incident occurred on July 27, when police stopped the taxi in which Shulhat was traveling and handcuffed him. Hromadske claims that the documents in their possession confirm that the journalist did not commit any violations.
Yevhen Shulhat himself stated that the police used physical force against him during the detention. According to Hromadske, at the time of the stop, the journalist had already finished his work and was attending to personal matters while waiting to meet a friend.
Yaroslava Volvach, head of Hromadske’s investigative unit, noted that the police were only interested in the passenger’s documents, while the taxi driver was not checked. “This suggests that the detention was targeted,” Volvach emphasized.
Hromadske also reports that Shulhat had been working on a series of stories concerning possible corruption within law enforcement agencies.
The Police’s Position
In the evening, the Kyiv police released details of the incident. According to their account, they were checking the documents of the taxi driver and passenger. The passenger refused to present his military registration documents, so he was asked to go to the regional recruitment center to verify his information. However, according to the police, the passenger categorically refused, and he was detained.
