The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is preparing for a possible influx of migrants following calls on social media for an event scheduled for August 15. Water cannons and new barbed-wire barriers have appeared at the border, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing dpa.
Spain and Morocco have implemented additional security measures to prevent a repeat of the July events, when tens of thousands of migrants broke through into Ceuta. New barriers have been erected in the border town of Fnideq, and patrol boats are monitoring the coastline.
There are currently 880 national police officers in Ceuta, 270 more than at the end of July. They are supported by about 2,000 military personnel and 700 Civil Guard officers. Despite the calls, the border was quiet this morning.
Background
In July, up to 80,000 migrants stormed into Ceuta, marking an unexpected and large-scale incident. Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that this was an isolated incident that should not be repeated. Moroccan authorities have already arrested individuals suspected of inciting new attempts at illegal entry.
