The Austrian government plans to extend the term of military service from six to nine months to adapt to the new security conditions caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine. RBC-Ukraine reports this, citing Reuters.
For many years, the neutral Austrian Armed Forces have primarily performed civil defense functions, assisting emergency services during natural disasters such as floods or fires. In addition, the army has been involved in patrols aimed at intercepting illegal migrants. This has been the primary role of the armed forces, rather than halting the advance of foreign troops.
However, in light of the current situation, the country is reevaluating its security policies. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker stated during a press conference at a military barracks near Salzburg: “In recent years, months, and weeks, the security situation has changed dramatically. The dream of lasting peace in Europe has been shattered, at least since the start of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.”
He also noted that, in addition to existing threats, new ones have emerged, such as hybrid attacks and cyberwarfare. “These events clearly demonstrate that Austria must take on more responsibility for its own capabilities in terms of self-sufficiency and the protection of its population,” Stocker added.
